BCBSNC Issues an Alert for a Nationwide Scheme
Individuals Receiving Letters from RED Medical Billing Should Disregard These Notices
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) recently learned of a nationwide scheme involving letters from “RED Medical Billing.” These letters appear to be collection notices, claiming customers owe a past-due amount to Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS). Sample letters and envelopes are attached.
No specific BCBS plan is mentioned, and these letters are not coming from, or on behalf of, any BCBS plan.
The letters have been mailed to individuals with names and addresses easily obtained from any phone directory. And because the letters do not contain any private health information, we do not believe this scheme is related to any data breach.
If you are contacted about this by BCBSNC members, please ask them to not respond to the letter, and to notify the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Members can go here to find the closest office, or to report a mail crime. Postal inspectors will likely want to see the letter and envelope in question; however, if a member chooses not to contact the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the letter can be discarded.
BCBSNC has also reported this as mail fraud to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. We will continue to monitor this situation, and will update this article as more information becomes available.
